You're at the phase in life where you're ready to spread your wings. You have a fully operational online business (freelance or other) and you want to start managing it from anywhere in the world.

Starting an online business has never been easier, although managing your online business from the comfort of wherever you choose has its challenges.

If you're someone who wants to work on the go then you may be asking yourself...

  • What processes are necessary for me to work portably (not just remotely)

  • Where can I reasonably work when I'm away from home

  • How can I coordinate differences in time zones

I'll answer all these questions as I help you get to the bottom of how to manage your business from a laptop anywhere in the world.

Starting with a good recipe is imperative.

Recipes are well-formulated plans and are important in more areas than just baking. When managing a business from your digital device you'll need to set up a few processes before considering making yourself fully portable.

1. Start using a CRM to simplify your client and team communications and processes

2. Make sure your phone plan includes an unlimited hotspot feature

3. Set high notification frequencies and interconnect all your devices

4. Have everything you need to set up a mini-office wherever you go

5. Get used to using all these new tools on a regular basis

Within the aforementioned processes remember to account for troubleshooting and errors that may occur. Having tech support numbers on hand in your contacts will save you time greatly down the road when you run into problems.

Whether you're traveling or if you like to work in different settings around town, if you have the proper processes in place you'll have a higher likelihood of meeting all your business needs successfully.

Some places are better to work than others.

When you leave home with your laptop and other popup office goods you'll need to find somewhere to set up shop - but all locales are not created equal.

Keep in mind that your mobile hotspot won't work in areas without cell reception. So that gorgeous cabin you booked that doesn't have wifi and is in the middle of nowhere might not be the best place to get work done.

Remember: You'll need access to reliable internet and power no matter where you go.

I recommend staying close to a coffee shop, library, or office space collective when venturing out during normal business hours. This is especially true if you're traveling to overnight locations where you want to be able to continue working without interruption.

Coffee shops aren't always open at midnight.

When traveling it's especially important to remember things like time zone differences and what your waking hours will need to be to account for such differences in time.

Having a coffee shop nearby isn't handy if your team is on EST and you're in a totally different uncomplimentary timezone in the middle of the night with no wifi.

If you're traveling to other distant parts of the globe try to always plan your waking hours around your clients or teams and be prepared to work some odd times.

Jetlag, in this case, works in your favor, as you'll be able to adhere to the same time schedule but this may also interfere with your travel plans in other ways (recreation, food, and shopping during normal business hours).

Keeping these factors in mind will help you get started as a portable business owner but your unique mindset and skills will come in handy when issues arise (trust that they will).

Being the boss means being prepared, and now you're ready for what life throws at you.
